乳がんが生命を脅かす疾患ではなくなることを目指す
ランフォーザキュア／ピンクボール2023への協力

Pink Ball is Run For the Cure Foundation’s largest charity event of the year, celebrating its 20th anniversary on March 3rd 2023. The Live and Silent auction proceeds go towards the Foundation’s community outreach programs. All their programs are developed and carried out free of charge to improve the quality of life of breast cancer patients and survivors, as well as to raise greater awareness of the disease in Japan—both in the Japanese speaking and international communities. It is my honor to, this year, donate an artwork for this very worthy cause.

RFTC (ラン・フォー・ザ・キュア) とは、教育・啓発活動、定期検診の促進および治療を通じ、日本において乳がんが生命を脅かす疾患ではなくなることを使命とし活動しているNPO法人です。そしてピンクボールは、乳がんに関するアウェアネス、診断、治療の更なる向上をはかるミッションに賛同するサポーターが集まり、活動のための資金を募るブラックタイのチャリティーガラです。
20周年を迎えるPink Ball 2023は、3月3日(金)コンラッド東京にて開催され、このイベントで集められた寄付金は、RFTCが実施するアウトリーチプログラムに活用されます。
今回は自身の制作したカリグラフィー・アートをピンクボール 2023 に寄付いたしました。
2008年からピンクボール・サイレントオークションへのアート作品寄付を通じて、この価値ある目的を支援して来たことを光栄に思います。

2022年 調和庵 プロジェクト

建築界の世界的巨匠 隈研吾氏が 横浜インターナショナルスクール 新キャンパスを設計。
2022年1月 本牧に開校される新キャンパス、そして校舎屋上に造られた日本庭園と多目的茶室 調和庵。
その外壁に飾られる扁額オブジェのデザインと制作を拝命いたしました。

調和庵 私のコンセプトとデザイン：

調和庵 扁額オブジェの制作でメインとなるマテリアルは、88個の「一合枡」です。
段差をつけ、少しずつずらして行き結合させます。
完成形は通常の扁額のように四つの角を持つ長方形ではなく、空に浮かぶ雲のよう。
建物に向かい歩いて行く際、斜め横からの目視では凸凹な扁額の文字を読むことは出来ませんが、真正面に立ち 目線の角度を調整することにより 調和庵と読むことが出来ます。
沢山の「枡」で造る意味には、” ます ます ” =「益々」と語音の通ずる、かつて日本で楽しまれた粋な言葉遊びを掛けた意匠です。
益々とは、前より発展・進歩するという意味。
「より一層の調和を」との思いを込めた発想です。
88という数字についても日本では末広がりを重ねた縁起が良くおめでたいもの。
横にすれば “Infinity” のマーク。 意味は「無限」です。
また、色や木目、質感など、各々おもむきの異なった一合枡を合わせることによって生まれる「調和」を表現しております。

CHOWA-AN - Project - 2022

World-renowned architect Kengo Kuma has designed Yokohama International School’s new campus in the Honmoku area of the city, opening in January 2022. I am thrilled to have been commissioned by the school to create a calligraphic plaque artwork for Chowa-an, a Japanese teahouse-inspired multipurpose facility built on the roof of the main building. Chowa means harmony in Japanese, and an is a kind of hermitage or retreat. The facility, which also features a Japanese garden, is intended as a learning and wellness center for the school community.

My concept and design:

The Chowa-an plaque will be constructed principally of 80 individual ichigo-masu, the square wooden cups originally used to measure rice in feudal times and now used for drinking sake. The masu will be joined together in a textured three-dimensional plane with the kanji characters for Chowa-an (調和庵) carved into the surface. Unlike traditional flat rectangular calligraphic plaques with four distinct corners, my piece will appear to float in the air like a cloud. As you approach it diagonally from the side, you won’t be able to make out the characters on the uneven surface at first, but as you reach the point directly in front of it, the characters will be clearly visible.

There is also meaning and wordplay behind the choice of materials. The phrase masu-masu means “more and more” in Japanese, and I hope that this artwork will help spark more and more growth and progress for students, teachers and others, and inspire even greater harmony. I am also trying to reflect the harmony among the diverse members of the school community through the use of masu with different types of wood grain, texture and color.

2021年 櫻井髑髏 SAKURAI DOKURO 復活

ドイツ ケルンでの作品制作と展覧会のため 3ヶ月間の滞在から帰国して間もない 2019年12月1日、3.5メートルの高さから落下する事故に遭い椎体を骨折してしまいました。幸いにも下半身付随からは免がれましたが、１年半の間 何もすることが出来ず 本当に辛い時間を過ごしました。
連日痛みやストレスと闘いながらのリハビリ。
そして１年半もの長い間、たった一つの作品すら造ることも出来ない 最悪の日々でした。

事故後２回目の春が来て、見るたびに悲しくなる 乗れなくなってしまったオートバイたち。
晴れた日はいつも弄っていた頃を思い出し、なんとかエンジンを掛けようにも掛からない。
ガレージの工具にも錆が出て、長い間使っていない鋸や玄能など、仕事道具たちも皆錆びていた. . .


立夏、このままじゃ駄目だ。必要なのは気持ちのシフト。

それからは毎日 まずは道具の手入れ。
油入れして磨いた古いドライバーには 木の握りに砥ぎたての小刀で髑髏を彫る。
気持ちも入って エンジン腰上腰下全バラOHにて復活。
クラッチとブレーキレバーにはスカルの彫金。
そして鋸や小刀の柄、Tabaccoパイプには野晒しの彫刻。
また鹿角彫りで指輪、根付や緒締め玉など提げ物、帯留め、帯飾り、靴飾りなどのアクセサリー、そして刺子の衣服やTattooデザインに至るまで、45年に渡る髑髏好きが高じて 再び自ら独自の髑髏の世界を表現。

　和髑髏物の造形など 実は2003年頃から密かに傍らで制作して来た櫻井髑髏。
2021年、"唯一無二” のブランドとして 櫻井髑髏 - SAKURAI DOKURO を立ち上げる。

再々覚醒 - 櫻井髑髏 SAKURAI DOKURO - 復活です。

低く狭い入り口の櫻井髑髏。
それは茶の湯の精神と作法 - 躙り口から。
千利休が生きた戦国時代は主従関係が強い時代でしたが、茶室の中ではすべての人が平等ということを示すため入口を低くしました。またどんなに身分が高い人であっても、刀などの装身具すべてを外し頭を下げなくては茶室に入ることができません。
櫻井髑髏は神聖な場所で、その中では皆平等。
房主はお客さまに敬意を払い、作品を通して一人一人と直接向き合い親密な関係を築いて行きたいとの思いから、店舗販売の予定はなく、作品は私から直接のみでお求めいただいております。

2021 - 櫻井髑髏 SAKURAI DOKURO - REVIVAL

On December 1, 2019, shortly after returning from a 3-month artist-in-residency and exhibition of my work in Cologne, Germany, I had an accident falling from a height of 3.5 meters and fractured a vertebra in my back. Fortunately, I was spared from more serious damage to my lower body, but for a year and a half I was in rough shape and had a really hard time doing anything. Day after day I went through physical rehabilitation while battling pain and stress, and for a year and a half I couldn't create even a single piece of artwork.

The second spring after the accident came, and whenever I looked at my collection of old motorcycles in front of my house, I felt sad. I remembered sunny days when I used to tinker with them. Trying to start an engine, I couldn’t get it to work and my entire collection of tools in the garage were all rusted from disuse….

I couldn’t go on like this into the summer. I needed to shift my mindset.

So from then on, every day the first thing I did was to clean and care for my tools. One day, after oiling and polishing the wooden grip of an old screwdriver, I used a freshly sharpened small knife to carve a skull in the grip. Feeling energized with the screwdriver in hand, I did a top to bottom overhaul of the motorcycle engine and brought it back to life. I also carved skulls into the clutch and brake levers.

I went on to carve skulls into the handles of saws, small knives, and a tobacco pipe. I carved skull rings out of deer antler, made skull carvings for netsuke, ojime-beads for sagemono, obidome and obikazari, shoe decorations, as well as skull designs for sashiko garments and tattoos. I’ve had a fascination with skulls for some 45 years and with these latest pieces I am happy to be able to express my own unique world of skulls again.

I have actually been working behind the scenes on creating old-style Japanese skull Nozarashi-Dokuro design and other objects since around 2003. With the resurgence of new work, in 2021 I launched 櫻井髑髏 SAKURAI DOKURO as my "one of a kind” brand.

The entrance to the world of 櫻井髑髏 SAKURAI DOKURO is low and narrow in the spirit and manner of the tea ceremony and the low nijiri-guchi doors of Japanese tea houses. In the Warring States period when the famous tea master Sen no Rikyu lived, there was a strict social hierarchy, but the tea house entrance was made low to show that all people had equal status in the tea room. Even a person of high rank was not allowed to enter the tea room without removing their personal accessories, such as their sword, and bowing their head.

I think of 櫻井髑髏 SAKURAI DOKURO as a sacred place where everyone is equal. I believe that as an artist I can best show my respect for each customer and build a close relationship with them through directly showing my works. For that reason I do not plan to sell my works in stores; rather, they are only available for purchase through me.

”4 by 4” と題したエキジビション。 各アーティストがそれぞれセンターとなるメインの作品を一つ造った部屋に、そのユニークな作品からインスピレーションを受けた他の3人のアーティストたちが、自らもそのアートワークに作用し合う作品を各々が１つ仕立てます。そんな部屋が４つ。 全ての作品は全く違った趣きですが、４つの大陸の、４人のアーティストが、各々４つのアートを、４つの部屋に、計16個の作品たちは見えない糸により濃厚に結びつきます。 アーティスト自身もまたさまざまな形で結びついています。日本とドイツ、それぞれを拠点とする二組のアーティストカップル、４人は何年も前からの友人同士ですが、アジア、北アメリカ、南アメリカ、ヨーロッパとそれぞれ異なる４つの大陸からの出身です。 この展覧会では遠い文化、友情、そして距離と近接の創造的なワークフローの実験にもなることでしょう。 この相互プロセスによって新たに形成された様々な作品たちは、コラージュ、彫刻、絵画、書、ドローイング、オブジェクトまでと、多岐に渡る素材で考案されたコンセプチュアルアートとなります。 "4 by 4" Each of the four rooms center around an artist's “signature work,” with the other three artists taking inspiration from that piece and reacting in the development of their further works. Four artists, four works, four rooms, create an interconnected web of sixteen objects, independent yet analogous. The artists themselves are also linked in various ways. Two artist couples, one based in Japan the other in Germany, have been friends for years, and all four individuals hail from a different continent: Asia, North and South America, and Europe. The exhibition thus becomes an experiment in cultural dialogue between friends, based on a creative energy formed through both distance and proximity. The resulting works, born of this reciprocal process, include collage, sculpture, paintings, calligraphy, drawings and transformed objects. 再び目を覚ますこと。
迷いから覚め、過ちに気付くこと。
本気の力や潜在能力を発揮すること。
今まで知らなかった本来の才能や素性に気付くこと。
このような意味を持つこのタイトルは、
私自身が今までやって来たことからもう一歩飛躍したものにしたかったこと。
そして見捨てられた廃物たちですら、
素材としての本来持っている可能性やメッセージがあることを人々に伝えたいということ。
今までにないパッションとモージョーがみなぎる個展になること間違いなしです！

“REAWAKENING”
More than just a feeling or state of re-emergeance, Sai-Kaukusei refers to an awakening from confusion. Realizing mistakes. Recognizing, and embracing, innate talents, potential and identity. For me, “reawakening" has been a long-running theme in my life as well as in my art. My message for this exhibit is a simple one: Everything (and everyone) is raw material that holds infinite possibilities. Being in Germany and preparing for this exhibition at Kulturhaus Zanders has reawakened my passion and “mojo.” I am truly excited to be here.

My focus is on finding beauty in imperfect utilitarian objects and resurrecting these abandoned pieces into viable works of art.
The collection will include a wide range of Illuminated Sculpture, Object, Calligraphy and Wearable Art.

In simpler times Japanese used what they had. These days we reach for the new and convenient. How can we find beauty, and art, in the neglected and abandoned? To illustrate how unlikely objects can be transformed into viable works of art, there will be a live creative performance and a walking tour of over thirty selected items and artworks. Explanation in English, and audience members are welcome to bring old, discarded, objects, that might be incorporated into the work.

"With a strong belief that life, and value, don't have to be measured in "what was," Shoichi Sakurai transforms old, discarded and abandoned "treasures" into highly distinctive and imaginative illuminated sculpture, painting, calligraphy, wall art and jewelry as wearable sculpture."

The Frederick Harris Gallery is presenting an exhibition of my works, entitled "Re-Birth." A collection of old as well as new work will be featured.

I have been busy doing exhibitions in Europe; London, Ireland, and Germany, and haven't done a show in Japan in three years. This exhibition will be a real "welcome home" celebration.

Part of the proceeds of the exhibition will go toward the relief efforts for Tohoku.

モノは、なにも生まれて来たとおりの姿で終わらせてしまうことはない。 この世に生まれ人々の生活を支えてくれたモノなのに、 不用になるといとも簡単に捨てられてしまう、そんなモノたちに眼を向 け、「捨てない」をテーマに独自の観点により再び命を吹きこまれた廃物たちの再生の美を表現いたします。
今回の展示では、壁を装う造形を主に、書、画、灯りを放つ造形作品、また ジュエリーなど身につける造形作品と、新旧の作品たちをご覧いただけます。
この数年は、ロンドン、アイルランド、ドイツなどヨーロッパでの個展やイベントが多かったために、今回の日本での個展開催は３年ぶりになります。この機会に是非ともご観覧いただけましたら幸いです。また、今回の個展でも作品の売り上げの一部を被災地に寄付させて頂きます。

Der japanische Künstler Shoichi Sakurai zelebriert die Schönheit des Recyclings. Im Mittelpunkt stehen dabei elegante Lichtskulpturen und ungewöhnlich gestalteter Schmuck. Schlüsselelement seiner Kunst ist das ästhetische Konzept des „wabi sabi“. Sakurai entdeckt die Schönheit in Dingen, die von Alter, Gebrauch oder Vernachlässigung gezeichnet sind. Objekte, die weggeworfen oder verloren wurden, erfahren so eine Art „Wiedergeburt“ und werden mit neuem Leben erfüllt.

"Ein Zeitzeuge der Geschichte" (A Vigor witness of History)

My heart and prayers go out to all of those who have suffered such great devastation in the earthquake and tsunami in my home country of Japan. As an artist, I'd like to aid the disaster relief efforts by donating a portion of all sales from my exhibition to the Red Cross Japan. 東日本大震災においては、胸が張り裂ける思いでニュースを聞いております。亡くなられた沢山の方々のご冥福をお祈りし、被災された方々、避難を余儀なくされている方々へ、心からお見舞い申し上げます。そして、一人でも多くの方の無事と復興を祈り、私たちにも出来る最大限の支援を震災に見舞われた方々に行ないたいと思います。 この個展においても、作品の売り上げから日本赤十字社を通じて被災地に寄付させて頂きます。

2011年 3月 15日(火)～ 29日(火) アイルランド ダブリンの MONSTER TRUCK GALLERY にて”ライフ・ヴィヴィドリー・リーヴド・パート2” エキジビションの開催。 アーティストはエリス・オコーネル、デヴィッド・ファレル、ニック・ミ ラー、ニナ・タニス、ミシェル・コンシダイン、ルース・E・ライオン、そし て私 櫻井正一の７人の作品たちをご覧になれます。 私が創った作品はこちら≫ Tuesday, March 15th to Tuesday, March 29th, 2011, the Monster Truck Gallery in Dublin, Ireland, will host the "Life Vividly Lived Part 2" exhibition, featuring seven renowned artists and the work they were inspired to create on the life affirming island of Inish Turk Beg during the 2010 Artists’ Residency. Featured at the event will be works from the internationally acclaimed artists Michelle Considine, David Farrell, Ruth E. Lyon, Nick Miller, Ellis O'Connell, Nina Tanis, and Shoichi Sakurai.
